Lots of people will be on the road this Thanksgiving

Not surprisingly, the American Automobile Association, or AAA, is predicting another blockbuster year when it comes to the number of people who will be traveling more than 50 miles this Thanksgiving. AAA is predicting that 49.3 million people will take to the highways and roads this Thanksgiving holiday. This is almost 3 percent higher than last year's number and will be the most people on the road since 2005.

AAA indicated that reasonably low gas prices are contributing to the decision of many families to take a trip on what is known anecdotally as the busiest traveling time of the year, even busier than next month's Christmas season. Because of the higher volumes of traffic, AAA has also warned that, especially in some major metropolitan areas, there will likely be traffic jams, even in areas that are not normally prone to congestion.

Although Texas motorists should always be paying attention to the road and driving free of distractions, doing so will be especially important over the holiday, as sudden, unexplained slowdowns in traffic will be a real possibility. This busy travel time is also a great time to remind Longview residents about safe driving habits in general.

For those who are planning to have a drink or two this holiday, they should remember to arrange for alternate transportation. Especially with the advent of ride-sharing, there is simply no excuse for drunk driving. Likewise, motorists will need to remember to get enough rest before driving and travel at a reasonable speed, particularly, if winter weather happens to set in.

These are very simple things drivers are expected to do in order to keep fellow holiday travelers safe. If they fail to do these things, and they injure a Longview resident in a car accident as a result, the victim may be able to obtain compensation for his or her losses.
