Report: Texas drunk driving problem is round-the-clock

While many people in the Longview area may intuitively think that drunk driving is a problem that happens in the evening and overnight hours, statistics tell a slightly different and surprising story. Across the country, and between 2013 and 2017, there were over 3,900 fatalities related to drunk driving that happened during the so-called brunch hours, that is, between 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m., a time when most do not think drunk driving is a problem.

Moreover, the same report showed that, overall, over 10 percent of all deadly car accidents, which happened during these hours involved at least one drunk driver. In Texas, the problem with daylight drunk driving is quite a bit worse than the national average. Among all fatal accidents in this state which happened between 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m., almost 17 percent involved a drunk driver.

This is well above the national average and, according to the recent report, makes Texas the fourth worst state when it comes to boozy brunching, or day drinking. It should be granted, however, that not every incident involving drunk driving in the morning is related to having a fun brunch with mimosas or other alcoholic drinks.

For example, many people unfortunately struggle with alcohol addiction and may therefore be prone to drinking at any time of day. Still, such people must be responsible enough to stay off the road. Whatever the reason and whatever the time of day, a drunk driver has always chosen to put his or her own wants ahead of the safety of other people on the road.
