Survey: bad tech habits common among Millennial drivers

Anecdotally, Millennials, that is, those born in the 1980s through the mid-1990s, are more adept at using technology.

Being the first generations in which the internet and cell phones, including smart phones, were not just luxuries, people who are currently in their late 20s and 30s just see technology more as part of their daily lives.

Unfortunately, at least according to one survey, this may be contributing to some unsafe driving habits among motorists from the Millennial generation. For instance, over 85% said that they used their cellular phone in some fashion while also trying to drive.

More specifically, over 50% said they engaged in texting and driving, and about 1 out 3 admitted to accessing popular social media sites, like Twitter or Instagram, while behind the wheel.

To contrast, those in Generation X, that is, people born in the late 1960s and 1970s, admitted to talking on their phones at the rate of about 70%. Moreover, 36% said that they had sent or received texts and emails while driving. Finally,15% admitted to using Facebook or other social media sites.

Those in the Baby Boomer generation reportedly had an even better track record, with just a hair over 1 out of 10 of them admitting to texting and driving only about half saying that they had used a cellular phone behind the wheel of a car at all.

While the recent survey is to some extent an indictment on Millennial drivers, the reality is that across generations, it seems that many motorists in Texas are choosing to ignore the public warnings against texting and driving and other distracted driving behaviors. On a related point, it is becoming all too common to hear about serious and tragic car accidents caused by distracted driving.

Victims of distracted drivers who live in the Longview area can consider filing a legal claim in order to hold the negligent driver financially responsible for their injuries.
